Jade Stands on Top of Mauna Kea Feb 6th, 2005 -1 {Vignette # three:

Jade Stands on Top of Mauna Kea Feb 6th, 2005 -1 {Vignette # three:

JADE -- A short story interview by Oona and me:
(The story in photos follows)

We’re on our way from our home near Hilo to the top of Mauna Kea -- boogie board, camera, food and long-johns ready for a day in Hawaiian snow -- but our van starts complaining about the elevation gain halfway up the Saddle Road.

It obviously doesn’t want to journey up the mountain, so we park at the bottom (4000 ft elevation), walk to the beginning of the summit road and somewhat self-consciously stick out our thumbs.

One car passes and then a sturdy looking SUV stops. The father and son inside shuffle their car seat, skis and snowboard around to make room. Soo Jang Lee, and his 13 year-old son, Jade, of Hilo are on a quest for snow.

When we stop half-way up at the Visitors Station to acclimate at the 9,600ft elevation. Jade takes off the head-gear attached to his braces and changes into his snowboarding gear: boots, a shiny silver camouflage outfit complete with cool yet practical baggy, waterproof pants, a wool face mask and goggles.

“This equipment costs over $2000 when you buy it new,” says his dad, “Very expensive. But we bought it at a warehouse and only paid $1300.”
Was it worth it? Jade thinks so, and to see the joy his dad takes in his son’s delight at playing in snow, it seems it was.

“He learned about this sport on the computer and in magazines and wanted to try it, so on Thanksgiving vacation we went to Lake Tahoe and he enjoyed it so much, we went back in January. We got snowed in and ended up spending nearly a month there and Jade was hooked,” says his Dad.

This is Jade’s first weekend snowboarding at home in Hawaii and he jiggles with excitement as the rocky volcanic terrain gives way to snow.

Mr. Lee never actually skis today. He is too busy chauffeuring Jade in their car up the loop of road to the summit area to save him from walking, pointing out the rocks to be avoided and helping him choose the best descent.

Jade has only been snowboarding dozens of times, but already he is at ease with the sport, gliding confidently down the hill, carving perfect turns, even taking a couple of jumps along the way.

Milan

Milan

Everyone in Italy bikes!

Since I left my camera back at school I've been going through old photos to edit. That's the thing about photos, they remind you of happier memories. They're still-shots that can bring you back to that exact moment. Sometimes I wish I can go back in time and relive them. Whatever happened to those times?

Note to self: Happier times are soon to come.

On a side note, I started making a list of hobbies that I want to take up.
1. Photography. I want to get better at taking photos, hence me taking a photography class next semester. It would also probably help if I took my camera out of the house every now and then lol. I kind of want to get some new equipment, maybe perhaps a new lens :]
2. Piano. I miss playing the piano. Brushing up on my music theory would definitely help, so I'm taking a class on that too. That's the one perks of having one more semester left till graduation- you get to take all the fun classes that you always wanted to take.
3. Snowboard. I've never been into winter sports. Actually, I've been an athletic type of a gal, period. I went once and it was a lot of fun. I heard that it takes about 3 tries before you start to get the hang of it. Hopefully if people are right, I'll be a pro in about 2 more tries haha.
4. Learn guitar. I've attempted this one so many times. I'd like to finally check this one off my list. I think it would probably be best if I buy myself a guitar to actually force myself to practice.
5. TRAVEL. I love to travel. I have a checklist of all the places I want to explore. I'm excited for my trip to Amsterdam and Brussels in about a month. Next on my list is Asia. Asia is so big and there are just so many places to go to. I'm hoping that I can either teach English there or just leisurely travel there this summer.
6. Learn Chinese. Yesterday I went to Barnes and Nobles and I was so tempted to buy Rosetta Stone. It's almost $600 for the complete set. That's how much I paid for my plane tickets, so I decided to put it down. I'm hoping that if I go to China to teach English this summer, that I'll be able to pick up the language a little.

Going over this list I realize that many of these are expensive hobbies -_-

Sydney Port's fire-fighting tug 'Shirley Smith', Sydney Harbour

Sydney Port's fire-fighting tug 'Shirley Smith', Sydney Harbour

Randi Svensen* reports while tugs may be just one link in a long chain, they heralded Australia’s entry as a major player in the world’s trade arena.

When you’re on your boat on Sydney Harbour and a tanker or car-carrier glides gracefully past, what do you see? Do you wonder how such a large vessel can navigate the narrow channel in relatively shallow water to berth safely, and assume technology gets it there, or do you notice the tugboats, gently pushing and pulling their charge to its destination?

Ocean-going ships can’t manoeuvre easily at slow speeds so as well as pushing and pulling, tugs act as an extra rudder or brake, allowing the ship freedom of movement in closequarters it could never have on its own.

Without tugs, our ports would be inaccessible and trade to and from Australia would be almost impossible.

The sea is our lifeblood, and the reality is that this country needs shipping to survive, and shipping needs tugboats.
Granted, some modern ships are equipped with ‘inbuilt tugs’ – the Queen Mary 2, for example, is one of the few ships that could have berthed herself when she visited us earlier this year – but the technology of thrusters and azimuthing z-pellers, which allow ships to move sideways, is expensive and not justified in the case of those that do not often make port.

Tugs are, and will continue to be, an essential service for the survival of an island nation.

But tugs don’t just tow and guide ships.

On any day on Sydney Harbour you will see, as well as the large ship-handling tugs, the smaller workhorses of the tug industry like Polaris Marine’s Fern Bay and Leveret bustling about, moving floating cranes and barges.

Highly visible are Sydney Ports’ bright orange and yellow fire-fighting tugs Ted Noffs and Shirley Smith, but look carefully and you might also spot our Defence Force tugs with their understated livery of blue and cream or just plain grey.

Tugs are the worker ants of our harbours manoeuvring these enormous ships many times their own size. Without tugs, there would be no trade. Without trade, as was seen during World War II when merchant shipping was limited and extremely vulnerable, we risk being deprived of everything from basic foodstuffs to luxury consumer goods, unthought of in this age of plasma screens and 4WDs.

People talk of tugs from different perspectives – their strength, their power, or even that they are ‘cute’. My own tugboat odyssey began just over a year ago, when I was asked to chronicle the history of tugs and the towage industry in Australia. A keen historian and boatie, I was challenged and excited by the project because, like most people, I knew little or nothing about tugs beyond a distant romantic fascination.

I fell in love with them on my very first trip, on Adsteam’s Wombi, bringing the fully-laden tanker Ce-Ulsan into a tiny bay on Port Jackson. The Sydney sunlight shimmered that morning as the tugs manoeuvred the ship down the harbour in what – from the deck of a tug – feels like a slow, sensual dance.

The usual harbour tugboat crew of three – the master, engineer and a deckhand – worked as a well-oiled team, in an atmosphere of egalitarian camaraderie, serious when necessary and a lot of fun the rest of the time. The concise, polite patois between the ship’s pilot and the tug master was testimony to their mutual respect, from the greeting and acknowledgement of directions, to the pilot’s “Thank you Wombi” when the tug was released.
My tally of tug rides is growing. I’ve been on jobs tending oil tankers and bulk carriers. I’ve been on one of Adsteam’s multi-million dollar z-peller tugs as her fire monitors were tested, water spraying far into the distance, when the appearance of rainbows through the mist gave an unexpected glimpse of beauty that tempered the raw power of the fire-fighting equipment.

So powerful are these water pumps that, with the propellers disengaged, a tug with fire monitors blazing forward can be travelling at six knots astern. I’ve also experienced the G-forces as a tug turned, at speed, in its own length – without warning to me from the skipper, who was obviously testing my sea-legs which, I’m pleased to report, didn’t fail me.

I’ve started a tug’s massive engine by pressing firmly with the palm of my hand on a rounded disk about eight centimetres in diameter until the engine rewarded me with a satisfying roar. I’ve watched dolphins surf a bulk carrier’s bow waves only metres from the attending tug and I’ve been at the helm of a tug for a few minutes, albeit very closely supervised, and controlled the 5,000hp engines with only two small joysticks.

There’s nothing in the world like being on a tug job and it’s heady stuff for an otherwise deskbound researcher whose usual haunts are libraries and museums.

But there’s much, much more to the story of tugs than the marvels of today’s engineering, the result of 300 years of development and refinement.
Their evolution began in the days with visionar

Technology on a Shoestring: A Survival Guide for Educators and Other Professionals

Dealing with technology within the school environment poses problems that don’t exist in the corporate world, such as donated equipment, old computers, and special laws related to the disabilities and protection of children. In addition, many technical coordinators "fell" into the job simply because they were the first in their school to own a computer. This simple, easy-to-follow guide speaks directly to these beleaguered educators and their specific needs so they can fully understand technology and make it work for them.
Providing a practical road map for running a successful system in a low-budget and low-support environment, this survival guide addresses:
* How to consider important factors such as cost, support, and requirements
* How to handle vendors and users
* How to design a network or a website
* How to fight viruses, trouble shoot, or recover from a disaster
* How to maintain your own sanity through it all!

Policy Of Truth

Policy Of Truth

You had something to hide
Should have hidden it, shouldn't you
Now you're not satisfied
With what you're being put through
It's just time to pay the price
For not listening to advice
And deciding in your youth
On the policy of truth

Things could be so different now
It used to be so civilised
You will always wonder how
It could have been if you'd only lied
It's too late to change events
It's time to face the consequence
For delivering the proof
In the policy of truth

Never again is what you swore
The time before
Never again is what you swore
The time before

Now you're standing there tongue tied
You'd better learn your lesson well
Hide what you have to hide
And tell what you have to tell
You'll see your problems multiplied
If you continually decide
To faithfully pursue
The policy of truth

The LD in the 3000 LD stands for Long Distance, indicating the main use of the product, and these fins have emerged from the need to offer enthusiasts increasingly powerful fins, which are however less demanding than the Gara 3000 fins. Less muscle effort is required for kicking so divers can use them for longer, making them perfect to use many hours in a row. The softer blade is also very suitable for use in cold water, which is notorious for its tendency to stiffen materials and make them less flexible.

Key Largo Dry Rock Reef - Christ of the Abyss

Key Largo Dry Rock Reef - Christ of the Abyss

Christ of the Abyss is a 8 1/2 foot, 4,000 pound bronze sculpture of
Jesus Christ that stands in 25 feet of water off of Key Largo, Florida.
It is located near Dry Rocks, about six miles east-northeast of the Key
Largo Cut, in the John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park.
This reef is a very shallow dome shaped reef which breaks the surface at
low tide on the landward side, and slopes to 25 feet on the seaward
side. The statue is one of three cast from a mold by an Italian sculptor
Guido Galletti. It was originally made for Egidi Cressi, the dive
equipment manufacturer and later donated to John Pennekamp Coral Reef
State Park in 1966.

The original "Il Christo Degli Abissi" statue was placed in the
Mediterranean Sea off Genoa, Italy, in 1954. In 1961, a second statue
"Christ of the Deep" was cast from the same mold. The Cressi family of
Italy donated the statue to the Underwater Society of America, which in
turn donated it to the Florida State Park Service, in recognition of the
conservation efforts involved in the creation of America's first
underwater park.
The Christ Statue is one of the most famous and visited underwater sites
on earth, accessible to divers and snorkelers alike! Shallow high
profile spur and groove coral formations are surrounded by relatively
flat, coral and sponge encrusted hard bottom, and sand. Large Spotted
Eagle Rays and Southern Stingrays are often sighted near the sandy
perimeter.

Christ of the Abyss

Christ of the Abyss

This is the third of underwater statues of Christ of the Abyss created by Italian sculptor Guido Galletti.

The first "Il Cristo degli Abissi" was placed off the coast of San Fruttuoso Italy in 1954.
The second is located near St George Grenada. It was a gift from the Italian navy for Grenada’s assistance in rescuing the crew of the Italian vessel Bianca C. The sculpture was placed under water on October 22, 1961.

A third bronze from the original mold was commissioned by Italian dive equipment manufacturer, Egidio Cressi, and donated to The Underwater Society of America in 1962. It took three additional years to choose a site and raise the funds necessary to erect the statue.

An excellent short history of the statue can be found at keyshistory.org
